Tamilrockers: A Torrenting Tale Short-Lived

Piracy has been quite a pressing concern ever since people started uploading copyrighted content online for free of cost. Even though the general audience benefitted from this, others had to bear the loss as this affected the revenues of the original developers or owners severely.

The biggest problem isn’t piracy, it’s inconspicuousness“. Yes, we do agree with Mister Cory Doctorow who is one of the many individuals who have always opposed the idea of piracy when it comes to the world of entertainment.

Movies, TV shows, and even originals from OTT platforms are often available online via illicit means. People from all over the globe access tons of websites that offer content illegally to satiate their hunger for the latest movies and Tv shows.

Among these platforms, comes a website that went through the likes of being the most popular torrenting website in the Indian subcontinent, to being taken down permanently a couple of years ago. Yes, we are talking about Tamilrockers.

Introduction to Tamilrockers

To begin, it is an illegal Indian website where illegal streams are hosted along with the option of streaming movies and content from a wide variety of industries that includes Malayalam, Telegu, Tamil, and Bollywood movies, with the option of downloading them for offline use also available for the users.

The website of Tamilrockers was pretty popular in the local circuit as the content that the website offers is fresh and mostly the latest as well. To top all this, the website has a wide range of genres and also offers content following the region which makes it stand out when compared to other platforms.

The website of Tamilrockers was founded way back in the year 2011 by three people. Fast forward to 2018, these three were arrested, and even though it was an Indian website, it had contributors from all over the globe. Rumor has it that most of the movies that were available on this website were directly uploaded after recording them from local cinema theatres.

Major Leaks By Tamilrockers

Some of the most notable leaks from this website included the likes of Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters like Kabir Singh, Dark, Rasbhari, Gunjan Saxena, Aarya, Paatal Lok, Penguin, Family Man, Gulabo Sitabo, Chintu ka Birthday, Avengers: Endgame, Choked, Raktanchal, Betaal, Illegal, Super 30, Article 15, Uri: The Surgical Strike, The Raikar Case, Hundred, Extraction, Hasmukh, Money, Heist, The Lion King, and Frozen along with many others.

Tamilrockers made its name in the earlier stages by offering links to newly released movies. This led to instantaneous fame for the website. Many even say that the website has been following the footsteps of none other than the torrenting giant, The Pirate Bay.

Before its descent, the website of Pirate Bay was also quite popular for offering instant download links for newly released movies which included both Bollywood and Hollywood as well.

The Downfall of Tamilrockers

It is said that several DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) reports were filed against the website of Amazon International which ultimately led to the removal of this website from the registry of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers).

All of this led to an uprising against torrent websites as now, not only did Tamilrockers had to face a ban, but legal authorities were also on the hunt for websites that offered similar content and were promoting the distribution of copyrighted content. Although the domain name of the website was pretty frequently changed which somewhat helped the website to survive in the market.

According to stats, as many as 18% of the total Indian population is found to be streaming content illegally with the use of websites like Tamilrockers which is also one of the main reasons behind the instantaneous success of the website.

After a while, it became a threat to the producers and the local filmmakers which is why they requested the Government of India (GOI) to take this website down for good. But the website managed to stay afloat by changing names and domains as we mentioned earlier.
