Detroit is the largest city in Michigan, and so you can be assured that there will always be plenty to do while you’re there! 

It’s well known for its auto industry, so if you’re an engineering and technology buff, then Henry Ford’s Museum of American Innovation is not to be missed. For those who prefer the arts to the sciences, the Detroit Institute of arts will provide a feast for the eyes.

That said, everyone likes to get out of the city from time to time. If you want a weekend getaway that’s in easy reach of Detroit, then you’re in luck. The city is well placed to access locations that will appeal to everyone.

Ann Arbor

Ann Arbor is known for being home to the University of Michigan, so you might expect the town to be chock full of bookstores and museums. However, it’s easily accessible from Detroit, taking just 45 minutes by car, so you could even head over just for the day.

If you’re a museum lover, it would be very easy to spend your whole time there doing little else, as there are over 16 of them! The Museum of Natural History and The Museum of Art are particular highlights.

For those of you who like getting into the great outdoors, Ann Arbor has some great options. Toronto

If you feel like going somewhere completely different, why not another country? Toronto, Canada, is just a 55-minute flight from Detroit, making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway. Simply book Detroit airport parking, drop off the car and be on your way to adventure.

Toronto is a city where the natural world and sleek city life collide. The skyline is full of skyscrapers like the iconic CN tower (complete with a revolving restaurant), but 13% of the city is covered by green space! High Park is a must-see for visitors to Ontario’s capital city.

Bay city

Just under two hours’ drive from Detroit is the gorgeous Bay City. The city is the perfect spot for people who enjoy hearing the lapping of waves and seeing the twinkling of sunlight on water. 

If you enjoy sailing, you can take a boat trip or enjoy dinner and dancing aboard an entertainment cruise.

The naval ship museum and third street bridge are also not to be missed.

Cleveland

An absolute must for music fans, Cleveland is home to the legendary rock and roll hall of fame, and it’s under a three-hour drive from Detroit!

The city also boasts beautiful beaches, including secluded stretches of coastline at the Huntington reservation, which is the perfect spot to enjoy a picnic. Foodies will love the huge array of culinary choices on offer, and art lovers will spend hours in the galleries of The Cleveland Museum of Art.
