Officine Panerai’s story begins, not just as a store and workbench, but rather as the town’s first watchmaker’s school. Giovanni Panerai opened its watchmaker’s shop on Ponte alle Grazie in Florence, Italy in 1860. The shop then moved to its existing location in the Arcivescovile Palace on Piazza San Giovanni and altered the name to “Orologeria Svizzera” at the turn of the 20th century.
Panerai comprises four commercial lines: the Manifattura, Contemporary, Historical, and Special Editions of 500, 1.000, 2.000, or 4.000 units of which, on the case back, an issue number is carried. Special editions are produced by the company each year. The special edition of the 1936 California Dialog Radiomir, a relaunch of the first Panerai model, which was limited to 1936 units, was provided to the Italian Marina Militare. In 2005, Ferrari and Panerai signed a 5-year agreement to design, manufacture and deliver Panerai watches with the Ferrari trademark.
