Can We Make Jewelry from Steel?

January 11, 2023

For many years, jewelers have been using different metals to put their creativity on them. They enthusiastically accept new alloys and metals and transform them into magnificent pieces of jewelry.  From modest steel to exquisite platinum, you’ll discover the jewelry in every metal you can think of. Each of these materials has different benefits and drawbacks, so learning a little about metals in jewelry is helpful before you start making jewelry from steel.

Why Craftsman Love to Make Jewelry from Steel

Steel is popular among jewelers because it is hard, sturdy, and inflexible. In past years, steel was used to reflect light as it can reflect 50% of light wavelength. Polishing steel can give a dazzling shine to your jewelry. It is less expensive than gold and platinum. Steel is very beneficial to use as cutlery, as it contains antimicrobial characteristics. Compared to many other metals steel jewelry is long-lasting and more durable.

Making Jewelry from Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is a cost-effective option for people who love to wear silver jewelry. It is an alloy made of chromium, nickel, iron, copper, and other mixed elements.  There are numerous reasons to consider this metal to create jewelry from it. As stainless steel is a corrosion-resistant metal, it can work great as a piece of jewelry if exposed to water and chemicals. It is inexpensive and more durable than other metals. You can make a variety of jewelry products from steel i.e. bracelets, cufflinks, rings, watches, earrings, and more.

How to Make a Ring From Steel

Anyone can make a ring from steel if they have all the right equipment and tools. For a professional ring maker, the process only takes 2 to 3 hours. But if you are trying it for the first time, I am not gonna lie, it will easily take your half-day. You can use a bending machine to speed up the process. This is the reason I am giving a step-by-step guide on how to make a ring from steel with section bending. The material you’ll need is

  • steel pipe
  • Pipe grips
  • Hacksaw
  • tube to bend pipe
  • Files
  • sanding paper
  • Tape measure
  • Wire brush
  • Welder
  • workbench
  • Hammer

Procedure

Take a pipe that must be 1.5mm thick. Cut it 520mm in length. Use a 1.5-inch tube to bend the steel pipe round. Press the pipe against the 1.5-inch tube with the pipe held at the top of the vice’s jaws. Use a hammer or sheet metal bender to knock the ends. To avoid damaging the loop, first cut off the first ring with a screwdriver to separate the loops. You’ll see a space between the two ends once they’ve been cut out. Squeezing the ends together with the pipe grips and clamping them in the vice on time is the best way to bring the ends together.

Now use a welder to attach the ends together while still in the clamp. The stick will most likely do the work, however attaching may be a little more difficult, and filling out the welds will be considerably more difficult, so it may take a lot of time. While welding up, set up the welder to 24 amperages if you want great work. Last but not least step is the cleaning and finishing of your ring. Scrub everything with a wire brush and file with a round edge. To clean things, use a drill attachment with polishing gear and some green scratch wipes. You are done.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Making Jewelry from Steel

Steel can be utilized in a variety of applications, from kitchen utensils to automobile parts. The silvery finish of this alloy makes it a favorite item in jewelry creation. Stainless steel ornaments not only have a beautiful appearance but are also considerably more affordable than other alloys. When it comes to jewelry, stainless steel rings and bracelets are a good choice for regular wear because they are sturdy and durable. However, before you put that new band on your finger, think about the advantages and disadvantages as well. Pros:

Stainless steel is a strong metal that can resist the wear and tear of daily activities. Because of an unseen layer of chromium that inhibits oxidation, the strong metal resists scratches and corrosion, making it an excellent choice for jewelry. Stainless steel jewelry is also easier to maintain. Warm water, liquid soap, and a little elbow work will bring your stainless steel ring back to life. As it is not a valuable metal like gold or platinum, stainless steel is a fairly affordable choice.

Cons:

Stainless steel jewelry is strong but it can easily prone to dents. Sizing steel jewelry can be challenging because it is an inflexible and hard metal. It is difficult to repair steel rings once they get damaged. Stainless steel may contain nickel, which can be harmful if you are sensitive to nickel. If you have any allergic issues with nickel you must consider wearing ceramic or platinum jewelry. It is a poor but a conductor of electricity, try to remove the steel jewelry before doing any electrician task.
